This drill will help teach the catcher how to get into the proper position receive the pitch. This drill can also be used as a receiving drill.
Baseball Equipment Needed: Home Plate and catcher’s glove
Drill Procedure:
- Pair up the catchers with a partner or coach.
- Put the catcher(s) in their stance behind a home plate.
- Have the partner or coach point to where the pitch is coming.
- The catcher responds to where their partner points by getting in the proper position. On outside or inside pitches, the catcher should push off and drop to their knees while they angle their body toward home plate.
- The partner should increase the speed of pointing as the cather gets better.
Tip: Coach should make sure that the catcher(s) are getting in the proper position each time the partner points their finger.

This drill is used to teach the catcher to block pitches properly. It can be done with or without a catcher’s glove.
Equipment Needed: Tennis balls, catcher’s glove (Optional), and a home plate
Drill Procedure:
- Pair up the players with a partner or coach and spread them out approximately 10-15 ft. away from one another.
- Put the catcher(s) in their stance behind a home plate with or without a catcher’s glove.
- Have the partner or coach throw pitches in the dirt to the catcher(s).
- The catcher(s) should practice getting into position and practice blocking the ball.
Tip: Coach should make sure that the catcher(s) are getting in the proper position each time the partner pitches the ball in the dirt. As the catcher gets better, you can switch to baseballs or softballs.

This drill is used to teach the catcher to block pitches properly. It can be done with or without a catcher’s glove. This drill will also teach the catcher to move quickly into position.
Equipment Needed: Tennis balls or any other ball, catcher’s glove (Optional), and a home plate.
Drill Procedure:
- Put the catcher(s) in their stance approximately 5 ft. infront of a wall behind a home plate with or without a catcher’s glove.
- Have the partner or coach throw pitches at the wall from behind the catcher.
- The catcher(s) should practice getting into position and practice blocking the ball.
- As the catcher gets better, the partner can throw pitches more rapidly and at different angles.
Tip: Coach should make sure that the catcher(s) are getting in the proper position each time the partner pitches the ball.
